  1. wow! when the discussion flows from business/corporate toxcity again turns to the "tahiti incident", and the longstanding scourge of male toxicity as it applies to women, things really get good. Scott seems to retreat into a defensive shell over some criticism of his "two good parents and no porn" solution to this multi-faceted problem, starting to argue with David's science based/statistical studies approach, before backing off and admitting that he's "just riffing", as so many of us do when involved in emotionally charged conversations. From there, Scott takes us on an emotional roll-a-coaster with his golf story. We can see with it's telling how deeply his own perceived lack of "meeting the moment" effected him, to the point of (perhaps) tears. Seeing Scott's emotion, and the way it seemed to linger through much of the ensuing convo, we feel confident that he'll "meet the moment" going forward.
As one who has also "missed the moment" in my past, I only hope I can do the same the next time my turn comes… Thanks for the inspiration, Scott!
PS: that Jordie clip is INSANE!!!

  2. Why is Scott on a podcast? DLS is an excellent surf journalist whom i disagree with often but turn to when there is serious news. But whatever Scott brings to the table is lost on me. During the segment about the Baja murders he provided nothing. If that was due to feeling emotional then at least say that. He comes across as a firewire dad with a state college degree. News flash, we have them in every line up and parking lot we don’t need them on a podcast.

  3. Appreciate the discourse on this one. First off, this whole situation is horrible and unacceptable. While Scott isnt always a wordsmith with getting his point across, I see what he’s saying how the WSL shouldn’t be the scapegoat here. The WSL suspended Al as soon as they found out. While I think Al is completely guilty and a POS, the WSL legally can’t make a condemning statement with the investigation ongoing.

Its easy to gang up on the WSL, and they have done a lot wrong in the way they operate, but I’m failing to see why this is on them here. David brings up examples of reps coming the the WSL and being dismissed, but unless I missed it, a completely different topic than SA. It’s not like the victim came to the WSL and they ignored her. They didn’t try to cover it up. Is there anyone saying that the WSL ignores SA reporting?

WSL is an easy scapegoat, when in the end it’s the values and morals of the people who knew about Al that are to blame, the men (and women) in the know, throughout the industry, who ignored it or bit their tongue. You want to blame that on WSL policy?! Try putting the blame on people choosing to stay silent vs speaking up, right vs wrong. It’s the whole culture, I’d blame the major surf brands before I blame the WSL on this one.

I will say, Scott shot himself in the foot with the “he said she said” comment though, that one didn’t help your case.

While important to discuss, sometimes I miss you guys taking about your local lineup and how your recent surf session was. Cheers.

  4. WSL caught with their pants down? Shocking. And, gee, Scott, maybe you could share your views on Jeffrey, DT and Ghislaine? "He saId, she said", Or Barack, single parent, Donald two parents… Low respect for a democratic workplace?.

  5. I had a whole comment but it's too much. I wholeheartedly agree, David. EDIT: Any NYT stories are always paywalled. I usually try to skim Twitter for someone with a subscription who posts a gifted link.

  6. If you do t make employees feel relevant and take their suggestions as valuable and worth implementation then you get the hubris of how the WSL was run. And ultimately they will fail when Ziff is tired of playing with his toy.

  7. David offers up opinions and perspectives based on sources and references while Scott, offering up no sources or stats, disagrees, then says they could both be right?

Maybe Scott's under the WSL NDA?
